Auschwitz I Entrance to Block 24
After the invasion of Poland there became an urgent need for more prison space
to accommodate those who could undermine the progress of the colonization of
Poland and the pre-war military barracks that became the Auschwitz Concentration
camp received the first 782 prisoners on 14 June 1940
